What drives you, Sonia?
Making a difference drives me.
I strive to better the lives of my clients, even beyond bookkeeping and accounting.
For example, I once showed a client who preferred to keep paper invoices a more effective way of organising his files. He later told me that this new way of organisation was much more convenient and changed his daily life. The fact that I was able to contribute something to his life gave me a sense of satisfaction.
I approach each day with the hope that I will make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s just something small.
The way I keep myself inspired is by knowing that I will enrich my clients’ lives through assisting them with their finances. After all, a client is not just a number or someone who pays you to do your job. To me, they are like family.
What book did you read that changed your life the most?
The book Awaken The Giant Within by Tony Robbins really changed my life. I think that kicking bad habits and living a fulfilling life are huge challenges for most people, including myself.
I enjoyed this book because it not only explains the how, but the why as well. It explains the role that our habits play in our lives and how these habits make us who we are. I found the book to be very helpful, especially in illustrating the how and the why of change as well as the importance of individual values.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
”Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit”
While determination builds character, quitting is habit forming. When quitting becomes routine, you won’t even think twice about giving up next time.
On the other hand, when you overcome even an insignificant challenge, you’ll gain the strength and motivation to confront your next challenge with confidence.
I believe that every great performer, every athlete, every inventor, every entrepreneur all share one thing in common: they achieved greatness because they had the confidence, skill, inner strength, and determination to make things happen. Something inside them said, “I’m not a quitter.”
What’s your current passion project outside of work?
I am passionate about hiking. I try to find time every weekend to hike and I think it is the best way for me to relax after a busy week.
Living in Canberra without going for hikes would be a huge loss!
Where's the most enjoyable place you have been to?
An empty long beach island in Vietnam. I was at a small S-shaped beach in the south of Vietnam which is renowned for its white sand beaches, the crystal clear waters that surround the island and abundance of nearby coral reefs.
When I was there with my family, we were the only ones there to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of the ocean waves.
